About the Show
Seussical the Musical is a whimsical, high-energy show that brings to life the beloved characters and stories of Dr. Seuss.
Featuring favourites like Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, and Gertrude McFuzz, the musical blends several classic tales into one vibrant narrative about friendship, imagination, and standing up for what’s right—no matter how small.
With catchy songs and colourful storytelling, Seussical is a heartwarming adventure for audiences of all ages!
Auditions Details
Location:
- 729 St Clair Ave. W., St Matthew’s United Church
Dates:
- September 22, 26, 27, 29
Individual Audition:
- Come prepared with one song that best showcases your voice.
- Please bring a speaker and an audio track to accompany you.
- Please also come prepared to perform one monologue or poem (memorized), no longer than 2 mins.
Dance Audition:
- You will be emailed a tutorial video to learn in advance and learn a short combination add-on in-person.
- Please wear comfortable footwear (dance shoes if you have them), and clothing you feel comfortable to move and groove in!

- Please also note that as Hillcrest Village Community Players continues to grow, casting becomes more difficult. With each new season, we remain neutral in our casting choices, whether you are new or have been in a production with us before. This also means that if you have been in one of our previous casts, you may be offered a role on the production side this time around. We strive for a community where people find joy and new experiences both on and off the stage.

Standard Rehearsal Dates:
- Tuesday’s & Sunday's beginning on October 15.
- A detailed rehearsal schedule will be provided in the coming months.
Please note that everyone will not be called to every rehearsal. Detailed schedules are provided at the first rehearsal.
Holiday Break:
- December 22, 2025 - January 3, 2026, No Rehearsal.
- Rehearsals resume on Sunday January 4, 2026.

The Cat in the Hat
- Role: Narrator and mischief-maker.
- Traits: Witty, chaotic, versatile; often breaks the fourth wall.
- Story Arc: Leads and shapes the story, often appearing in disguises to support or challenge characters.

- Vocal Range: Flexible (baritone or mezzo); character voice more important than range.

Thing 1 & Thing 2
- Role: Mischievous sidekicks to the Cat.
- Traits: Energetic, chaotic, silent, physical comedy role.

🌴 Jungle of Nool
Whimsical animals who live in the Jungle; they form the community that interacts with Horton and react to the chaos of his story!

- Traits: Loyal, gentle, thoughtful, a little awkward.
- Story Arc: Protects the Whos and Mayzie’s egg despite ridicule; learns he’s not alone.

- Vocal Range: Baritone/Tenor; expressive and warm.

Gertrude McFuzz, the Bird
- Role: Horton's shy, insecure neighbor.
- Traits: Sweet, neurotic, sincere.
Story Arc: Tries to change herself to impress Horton but learns self-acceptance. - Age: 20-40
- Vocal Range: Mezzo or Soprano with strong mix.

Mayzie LaBird, the Bird
- Role: Flashy, self-centered showbird.
- Traits: Flirtatious, dramatic, carefree (initially).

Sour Kangaroo, the Kangaroo
- Role: Horton's main antagonist.

Young Kangaroo, the Kangaroo

The Mayor & Mayor’s Husband/Wife of Whoville
- Role: JoJo’s well-meaning, stressed parents.

- Story Arc: Try to discipline JoJo out of love but come to accept his imagination.

General Genghis Khan Schmitz
- Role: A blustery, over-the-top military leader
- Traits: Commanding, exaggeratedly patriotic, intense, a little clueless

- Story Function: Leads JoJo into military school in an attempt to make him “tough,” representing the world’s pressure to suppress imagination.
